Making a strong pitch for a third term for his government ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that he would inaugurate the projects whose foundation stones were being laid now and present the country’s achievements from the Red Fort next year.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 77th Independence Day, PM Modi said, “Jab main kahta hoon na ki jiska shilanyas hamari sarkaar karti hai, uska udghatan bhi hamare kalkhand me karte hain. In dinon main shilanyas kar raha hun na, aap likhkar rakhiye uske udghatan bhi aap sabne mere nasib me hi chhode huye hain. (…The schemes for which our government lays the foundation stone, we also inaugurate them. You note it down, these days, the foundation stone I am laying down, you have left it in my destiny to inaugurate it.)”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted “India’s approach of women-led development”, the government’s efforts to alleviate poverty, and a burgeoning middle class as he delivered his last Independence Day speech ahead of the general election in 2024. In a speech lasting just over 90 minutes, PM Modi said that the country stands with violence-ravaged Manipur. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister also expressed confidence India would become a developed nation by 2047.
Referring to the countrymen as ‘parivarjan’ (family members), he said “Our goal is to strengthen the economy, empower the people, and make India a developed country”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised people that the country will be among the top global economies in the next five years.
“When poverty decreases, the strength of the middle class increases. In the coming five years, this is Modi’s guarantee – the country will be among the top the economies in the world. The 13.5 crore people who have come out of poverty, they become the strength of the middle class,” the PM said.
“It is the commitment of my life to keep fighting against corruption. Second, dynasty politics has ruined the country. It has taken away the rights of people. And the third evil is appeasement which has left a blot of the national character. We have to fight against these three evils with full force – corruption, dynasty politics and appeasement,” he said.
Furthermore, he added, “Today, we have demography, democracy and diversity – these three together have the ability to realise the dreams of the nation”.
Speaking about women empowerment, the PM lauded the contributions of women self-help groups and said his dream is to make two crore ‘lakhpati didis’.
“It is my dream to make two crore ‘lakhpati didis’ in the country. Today, 10 crore women are associated with women self-help groups,” the prime minister added.
He further said, “the one thing that will take the country forward is women-led development.”
“Today, we can proudly say that India has the maximum number of pilots in civil aviation. Women scientists are leading the Chandrayaan mission. The G20 countries are also recognising the importance of women-led development,” he said.
In his speech, PM Modi also ensured a better future for the young population in the country. He said, “There is no dearth of opportunities in the country. The country has the ability to provide endless opportunities.”
“I have faith in the power of youth, the youth has capability, and our policies and rituals are meant to give them strength. Our youth have taken India to the first three startup ecosystems of the world,” the Prime Minister said.
India’s progress is not only fuelled by Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai and the youth of our tier-2 cities are also creating an equal impact in our nation’s progress, he said.
