CLP meet today after Rajasthan Governor calls for Assembly session from August 14

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot will host the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting today, a day after the notice from Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra calling for the Rajasthan assembly to be convened on August 14.

Governor Kalraj Mishra’s office said Wedensday after days of back-and-forth on the matter between him and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot that the Governor has “approved the proposal to start the fifth session of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from August 14, sent by the Cabinet”.

The Governor had questioned the government’s third proposal this morning, which insisted on the July 31 date it mentioned earlier.

Mishra said that there appeared to be no convincing reason to call a session without a 21-day notice in view of the coronavirus outbreak, unless the government wanted to hold a trust vote. In that case, a short session with all the safety measures, including social distancing could be held, he said.

The Raj Bhawan announcement came a couple of hours after the Gehlot-led Cabinet sent a fourth proposal to the Governor for summoning the Rajasthan Assembly, mentioning August 14 as the new date. The government argued this met the 21-day notice requirement on which Mishra had insisted earlier, counting the days from July 23 when the first proposal for the session was sent to the Raj Bhawan. The Congress government had earlier asked for the session to begin on July 31.
